Heat Transfer vs Sublimation: Which Should You Choose?

You have got a design ready and a t-shirt order to place, and now you are stuck between two names that sound almost interchangeable until you look into the detail. Heat transfer and sublimation both rely on heat to get a design onto fabric, but that is roughly where the similarity ends. One method prints a design onto paper first and presses it onto the shirt as a finished top layer. The other turns dye into a gas and lets it soak straight into the internal fibres.

That distinction sounds technical, yet it shows up in very practical ways. It affects what fabric you can use, how vivid your colours look, how the print feels against your skin, and how long it lasts before it starts to fade or crack.

Printing on dark fabric works a little differently. Standard transfer paper is designed specifically for light garments, so dark shirts require paper with an opaque white backing layer built in. Without that white base layer, your design colours will print dull or fail to show up properly against the darker fabric underneath.

What Is Sublimation Printing?

Sublimation operates on an entirely different scientific principle. Your artwork is printed onto transfer paper using dedicated sublimation inks, then positioned against the garment and run through a heat press. Under extreme heat, those unique inks turn from a solid straight into a gas, skipping the liquid stage completely. That gas works its way deep into the synthetic fibres of the fabric itself rather than resting on the surface. Once the garment cools down, the dye is permanently locked into place inside the fabric.

That molecular bonding process is also why sublimation only works on polyester and polyester-blend fabrics. Synthetic fibres like polyester open up slightly under high heat, allowing the dye gas to penetrate them. Natural fibres like cotton simply do not react to heat in the same way, so the dye has nothing to bond with and will wash straight out. This is not just a minor quality trade-off, it is a strict physical rule. Sublimation cannot be used on cotton, nor can it be used on dark-coloured fabrics, because the translucent dye requires a light, ideally white, base to display its true colours.

Sublimation is the undisputed choice for sports jerseys, activewear, and any design that needs to cover the entire garment rather than sit within a small printed area. It is also the better option whenever a print needs to survive heavy, repeated washing without looking worn out after a season of use. Start with your fabric, as it automatically eliminates one method in many cases. If you are printing on cotton, or if you need dark-coloured garments, sublimation is off the table entirely, making heat transfer your default choice. Next, consider your budget and overall order quantity. Heat transfer has a much lower entry cost and suits smaller, one-off, or trial orders well, since there is no heavy setup baked into the unit price. Sublimation involves more initial setup and takes longer per piece, but it becomes the smarter choice once you are ordering in volume for items that need to endure, such as sports team kit.

Finally, weigh up how long the print needs to survive. A one-off event shirt that only gets worn a handful of times does not require the permanent bond of sublimation, as a heat transfer will do the job perfectly well for a lower cost.
